It has been a year since Scott took his position as a Sales Manager on Union Pacific's Motor Carrier Team. His new position is based out of UP's Salt Lake office where he has an office to work from, but he also has the option to work from home whenever he would like. It's hard to beat waking up and walking across the hall to work in your sweats, so working from home is what he does most days. We have found that there are many pros and cons to working from home. For example:
Pros: No commute time, the ultimate casual dress code, getting things done around the house during your lunch break, hanging out with the fam when work flow is slow, wife being able to leave napping baby home while picking up carpools and running errands, getting visits throughout the day from cute kids -- just to name a few.
Cons: Trying to make professional work calls with a crying baby or loud kids in the next room, family consantly trying the keep the house quiet while Scott is on calls, lots and lots of distractions throughout the day, finding a good time for kids to practice the piano, did I already say lots of distractions and disruptions? I'm sure the list could go on.
At the end of the day having Scott home this last year has been a tremendous blessing for our family. Even with him traveling as much as he is (2-3 days several times a month) we still see more of him than we ever did when he was working "8-5" in downtown Omaha. Back then he would leave for work before any of us woke up and would get home in time for a late dinner and to help with bedtime. Now he helps get the kids ready and off to school and is here to greet them when they get home from school. He is there for all their school programs and events. It is not uncommon for him to take a break from work to go throw around the football or shoot some hoops with the boys after school. I get to spend each day with my best friend who keeps me smiling and laughing even when life gets crazy. Most of all, I just love having him there for all the little moments in our day. Instead of me recapping all the cute and funny things the kids say and do I simply call to him from the other room and he gets to see and experience it first hand. Our family has never been closer and happier together than we have been this last year. We know that this is a temporary situation, but it is just what our family needed.
I have no doubt that in future years we will look back and remember this as one of the best times in our life.
